UMaine System fall enrollment down 2%

The University of Maine System’s fall enrollment is down 2% statewide, while the number of students at its flagship campus in Orono rose 3.2%.

The Portland Press Herald reported fall enrollment across the system’s seven campuses declined to 30,365, down 2% from last year and 6.1% from 2009, when the system counted 32,340 students.

The latest figures are up slightly from estimates in September, which showed enrollment down about 3%. University officials said a large reason for the enrollment drop is a decrease in Maine high school graduates. The university reported that the number of out-of-state students has increased 6.3% over last year.

At the University of Southern Maine — which competes with the University of New England in Biddeford, Husson University in South Portland, Southern New Hampshire University in Brunswick, Kaplan University in Portland and several other colleges in southern Maine — overall enrollment declined 4.9% from last year.
