Waterville bridge to be replaced in $53M revamp

Ticonic Bridge Screen shot via MaineDOT website The Ticonic Bridge between Waterville and Winslow will be closed to all traffic for the next six months during an ongoing replacement project.

The Ticonic Bridge connecting Waterville and Winslow over the Kennebec River will be closed for the next six months so that the structure can be replaced.

Pittsfield-based Cianbro Corp. is the contractor on the $52.8 million project for the Maine Department of Transportation.

During the bridge closure, vehicles will be detoured south to the Carter Memorial Bridge while pedestrians will be directed north to the Two Cent Bridge.

On-site prep for the bridge replacement project has been in the works for some time. The structure is being replaced on the existing alignment. The new bridge will be a two-span structure, made of corrosion-resistant steel girders and a concrete deck.

A single concrete pier will be built in the river to support the new bridge. This will reduce the likelihood of ice jams. Portions of the old bridge are more than a century old and at the end of their useful life, according to MaineDOT.

The new bridge will carry five lanes of traffic (similar to the existing bridge), feature widened shoulders and include sidewalks on both sides. On-site construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of May 2027.

When the new bridge reopens, eastbound vehicle traffic will be allowed back on the bridge but westbound vehicle traffic will remain prohibited on the structure for another 12 and 18 months while construction continues.

When the bridge reopens to eastbound vehicle traffic, MaineDOT will also reopen the bridge to pedestrian traffic, using the new sidewalk on the upstream side of the bridge.
