White House: Stimulus to bolster 16,000 Maine jobs

The economic stimulus plan proposed by President Obama will create or save 16,000 jobs in Maine, according to White House estimates released yesterday.

The White House says the plan would create three to four million jobs over the next two years, including 800,000 in Eastern states, led by New York, which is expected to gain 228,000 jobs. Another 17,000 jobs are projected in New Hampshire, 83,000 in Massachusetts, 8,000 in Vermont, 44,000 in Connecticut and 13,000 in Rhode Island.

Congress continues to debate the $800 billion-plus recovery plan, with many Republicans doubting the bill's ability to fuel job growth. Maine's U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe play key roles in the deliberations, and will convene today with President Obama and other senators to discuss the recovery plan, the Portland Press Herald reported. Both senators agree that a stimulus is necessary, but each has expressed concern over the $819 billion bill the House passed last week.
