Board: Casino group must release owner info
The developers behind the Oxford County casino must release the names of its owners as well as the percentages of their stakes in the company, a state board ruled yesterday.
Triggered by a Freedom Of Access Act request, the Gambling Control Board ruled that revealing the owners and percentages of Black Bear Development's owners would not violate trade secrets or the owners' privacy, the Sun Journal reported. The FOA request sought copies of Black Bear's casino operator's license application, which a lawyer for the developers said included proprietary company information and the release of which would constitute an invasion of privacy. Black Bear attorney Melissa O'Dea told Capitol News Service the group only opposes releasing the owners' percentages, not their names. The board's decision is effective Nov. 8, which gives Black Bear time to dispute the measure in court. Black Bear spokesman Scott Smith declined to comment.
Investors in Black Bear Entertainment, the group that put the casino question on the 2010 ballot, include Rob Lally, co-owner of Mt. Abram ski resort in Greenwood; Steve Barber, former president and CEO of Barber Foods in Portland; and Bob Bahre, former owner of the Oxford Plains Speedway, and his son, Gary. Last month, Black Bear selected Las Vegas-based Silverton Casino to support development and operations of the Oxford facility.
