Bowdoin College's plan to expand on Brunswick Naval Air Station property has received final federal approval.
The college said Friday the U.S. Department of Education has signed off on its request to acquire 259 acres of base property when it closes next year, according to The Times Record. Of the total acres in three separate parcels, 146 acres are developable. Bowdoin's plans for the property include a storage facility and warehouse, parking, athletic fields, nature trails and farming space, as well as an environmental studies classroom and laboratory building.
In related news, a group trying to locate a park and garden on the property is concerned there won't be land left over for the project, according to the Portland Press Herald. The Federal Aviation Administration has objected to Brunswick Park and Gardens' proposed location near the runways, saying the garden would attract large numbers of birds and could result in bird strikes. The runways will be used by private aircraft on a limited basis.
