The University of New England is receiving up to $10 million from the Harold Alfond Foundation to build a new athletic complex in Biddeford and train health care workers.
The foundation has promised $7 million to UNE for the complex and will give the school another $3 million for health care education if UNE can match the $7 million gift by the fall of 2012, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. The 100,000-square-foot athletic complex will include an ice hockey rink, basketball court, fitness center and indoor practice fields. UNE President Danielle Ripich told MPBN she was confident the school could raise $7 million on its own, and said UNE is applying for $3.5 million in dental school bond funds that were recently approved by voters.
The gift is the largest the school has ever received, topping its previous record of $2.5 million, which also came from the Harold Alfond Foundation.
