Home sales, prices on the rise

Home sales in January were up nearly 19% from 2009, and for the first time in over a year, the median sales price rose as well.

A total of 484 homes were sold in January, an 18.63% increase over January 2009, making it the eighth consecutive month of positive gains, according to the Maine Real Estate Information Service. For the first time since November 2007, the median sales price increased over the previous year. January's price rose 5.09% compared with January 2009, reaching $160,000.

In the Northeast, home sales increased 22.4% in January, with the median price rising 8.8% to $245,300. Nationwide, sales increased 8.6%, while the median sales price dipped 0.4% to $163,600.
