Kibby Mnt. wind farm officially begins operations

Power from the Kibby Mountain wind power project that goes online today is expected to meet the electrical needs of 25,000 homes.

Gov. John Baldacci and other officials were on hand today to mark the startup of the first 22 windmills in the TransCanada wind farm, sited on a ridge in western Maine, according to the Associated Press. The second phase of the $320 million project by the Alberta, Calgary-based energy company, which will double its generating capacity, should be online by next fall and will make it the largest wind farm in New England, according to the AP.

The project is the third large wind farm to go online in Maine, following Newton, Mass.-based First Wind's farms in Mars Hill and Stetson Mountain.
