Lawmakers vote to cut own budget

Legislative leaders have voted to cut the Legislature's spending by $8.3 million over the next two years as part of ongoing efforts to balance the state budget beginning July 1.

The group voted to trim the proposed $59.3 million budget for the Legislature and its offices over the next two years by suspending longevity pay and increasing pension costs, according to Capitol News Service. They also voted to cut out-of-state travel by 30%, halt cost-of-living increases for legislators and reduce the length of the legislative session by a week, resulting in an $8.9 million reduction. However, a proposal to increase security at the State House for a cost of $546,000 brought the savings to $8.3 million. A task force will continue to study ways to cut costs, according to the news service.

Leaders voted 8-1 in favor of the proposed legislative budget that will be forwarded to the appropriations committee for inclusion in the state budget.
