Mattson gets Muskie School as tenant at former hospital

The owner of MaineGeneral’s former East Chestnut Street hospital in Augusta has signed an agreement with a first tenant for the redevelopment project, the University of Southern Maine’s Muskie School of Public Policy.

The Kennebec Journal reported the school will lease the 10,000-square-foot Haynes building behind the former hospital’s main building, where the school will lease 2,000 square feet for classrooms. The Portland-based school will move its Augusta offices at the Central Maine Commerce Center to the Haynes building on or around July 1. The lease agreement with the school is for $14 per square foot, or $168,000 per year for the school. He said the move could save the school around $100,000 from its current space at the Commerce Center.

Developer Kevin Mattson, president of project leader Dirigo Capital Advisors, told the newspaper he expects that the 317,000-square-foot former hospital building will secure leases for at least half of its space by the end of the year.
