A gambling initiative aiming to establish racinos in Biddeford and Washington County is slated to go before the state Legislature.
Secretary of State Charles Summers on Friday announced that supporters of the two racinos gathered 75,672 petition signatures, more than the 57,277 required by state law, according to a press release from the secretary of state's office. Should the Legislature reject the measure, "An Act To Amend the Laws Governing the Deadline and Conditions for Municipal Approval of a Second Racino and To Allow a Tribal Racino in Washington County," it will go to state voters in the November referendum.
Scarborough Downs and New Hampshire-based hotel developer Ocean Properties are hoping to relocate the harness-racing facility to Biddeford and also operate slot machines. The group last month filed the petition, which would change provisions in state law to allow the project to move forward. The petition also seeks to allow the Passamaquoddy Tribe to operate a racino in Calais, an effort state voters previously denied.
Earlier this month, Summers verified signatures on a petition to locate a casino in Lewiston.
