After months of delay, a Massachusetts lobster company has finalized a deal to buy the former Stinson Seafood cannery in Gouldsboro.
Officials from Live Lobster Co. on Friday said the company completed the deal to buy the shuttered cannery from Bumble Bee Foods LLC for an undisclosed price, according to The Associated Press. Live Lobster Co. in August signed an agreement to buy the cannery, which closed last April, and originally hoped to close the deal within 70 days. However, a pending unfair termination lawsuit against the company, plus other complexities of the deal, led Live Lobster to push back the completion date to mid-January. The transaction was again delayed last month for unspecified reasons.
The company plans to hire between 30 and 40 people this spring and start buying and selling lobster and selling bait. Live Lobster eventually hopes to open a lobster-processing operation at the site. About 130 people lost their jobs when the cannery closed last year.
