Windham firearms maker to close

Bushmaster Firearms International in Windham is planning to close at the end of March, laying off 73 people.

Madison, N.C.-based Freedom Group Inc., the manufacturing facility's parent company, said it will keep the Bushmaster name but move firearms manufacturing to other facilities, according to the Portland Press Herald. Employees will receive severance packages and help finding new jobs. Founded in 1973, Bushmaster makes short- and long-barreled rifles used by law enforcement agencies, security firms and the military.

The company was acquired by private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management four years ago and put under the ownership of subsidiary Freedom Group. Freedom Group also owns firearms makers Remington Arms Co., Dakota Arms Cos. and Marlin Firearms, according to the paper.
